Science Communication for College Students

What is science communication?

Science communication (also known as “SciComm”) is the practice of writing, speaking, or presenting scientific research and ideas to general audiences in an engaging way. The main goals are to build understanding and trust between non-academics and academics or to introduce novice researchers to complex topics.

Why is it important?

  • Fighting misinformation – Social media use has led to countless misconceptions about science, SciComm helps to clarify the research

  • Increasing scientific literacy – Individuals from all backgrounds should feel comfortable enough to understand science

  • Engaging the public – Science stays relevant as long as there is general interest for it

  • Improving skill set – Add to resume, CV, portfolio, etc.

Potential Internship or Career Paths

  • Science Writer or Journalist

    • Write news or popular science articles so that the general public gets the latest scientific research in their inboxes and social media apps

  • Science Outreach Director

    • Design, evaluate, and implement programs that promote science to kids, students, or adults that are interested in learning more about basic science

  • Science Policy Advocate

    • Influence local or federal government to reference and understand the science behind their policy before implementing it
